Children ages 5 to 14 traveling alone must use United's unaccompanied minor service; it is mandatory in that band. Children under 5 cannot travel unaccompanied at all.
Ages 15 to 17 may travel as regular passengers, but families can add the unaccompanied minor service optionally for extra support on connections and boarding.
Fees and what's included
United charges an unaccompanied minor service fee each way, in addition to the child's ticket. The fee covers airline supervision from check-in through hand-off to the named guardian at the destination.
One fee typically covers up to two siblings traveling together. Confirm the current amount when booking, as fees change.
Route and nonstop rules
The service is generally limited to nonstop flights. United usually does not accept unaccompanied minors on itineraries with connections, and bookings on the last flight of the day may be restricted in case of disruption.

At the airport: paperwork and pickup
The adult dropping off must complete a form with the guardian's details, stay at the gate until the flight departs, and bring ID. The person picking up must be named on the form and show matching ID.
